This project explores the concept of self-representation through a visual language situated between surrealism, expressionism, and constructivism, drawing inspiration from the work of Joel-Peter Witkin, László Moholy-Nagy, and Man Ray.
Rather than creating a literal portrait, the project proposes a symbolic reconstruction of identity, where the body, memory, and personal interests merge into fragmented visual narratives. Influenced by Witkin’s provocative and emotionally charged imagery, the composition deconstructs and reassembles the self through ornamental objects and symbolic elements connected to my personality and experiences — including nature, dance, gastronomy, collecting, and the visual arts.
At the same time, the experimental approaches of Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray informed the project’s use of abstraction, photomontage, distortion, and layered composition. Their understanding of photography as a tool capable of transcending reality inspired a more dreamlike and conceptual interpretation of self-image, where the unconscious and the physical body coexist.
The project also reflects personal psychological and physical characteristics. Traits such as empathy, emotional sensitivity, fragility, stubbornness, and an “old soul” sensibility are translated visually through fragmented forms and symbolic contrasts. Physical elements — such as large eyes, voluminous curls and scars — become recurring motifs within the compositions, reinforcing the relationship between identity and body.
Through this fusion of symbolic imagery and experimental visual techniques, the project approaches self-representation not as a faithful reflection, but as an evolving, layered, and emotionally charged construction of the self.
