This project focused on the development of a conceptual packaging design centered around the idea of happiness as a tangible experience. The result was Sunshine in a Box — a kit designed to symbolically “deliver” joy through a carefully crafted visual and emotional language.
The concept emerged from the intersection of three key references associated with happiness: The Sun tarot card, the symbolism of the bluebird, and the psychedelic visual language of Wes Wilson. Across different cultures and historical contexts, both the sun and the bluebird have been connected to positivity, warmth, luck, and hope. These symbols became the foundation of the project’s identity.
Inspired by Wes Wilson’s iconic 1960s poster work, the visual approach embraces vibrant contrasting colors, organic distorted typography, and fluid illustrative forms. A color palette was extracted from one of Wilson’s 1966 posters for the Grateful Dead, helping establish a bold and energetic aesthetic. Graphic elements such as sun rays, faces, flowers, wings, and irregular shapes were developed and repeated throughout the kit to reinforce the immersive visual language.
The packaging itself was designed as a 25x25x7 cm square box, structured to comfortably organize all objects inside while creating a layered unboxing experience. The box opens into two sections: one introducing the symbolic meaning behind the kit, and the other containing instructions and descriptions for the included objects.
Typography played a central role in the project, following Wilson’s approach of integrating lettering into expanding and contracting shapes, allowing text and image to merge into a single expressive composition. The phrase “Sunshine in a Box” became the core of the visual identity, acting both as title and conceptual statement.
Designed as an uplifting and collectible object, this project explores how graphic design and packaging can communicate emotion, nostalgia, and optimism through symbolism and immersive visual storytelling.
